Returning the Favor Trophy in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy (Knife Kill)

Returning the Favor needs a thrown-knife kill on an archer. Earliest spot is Chapter 4's ambush room; here is the exact setup and the Chapter 5 backup location.

Returning the Favor asks you to kill an archer with a thrown knife, and the game hands you the perfect stage for it: an ambush full of crossbowmen and a knife lying on the floor. It is one of the earliest combat trophies you can miss simply by not noticing the pickup prompt.

The requirement, precisely

Kill an archer with a thrown knife — not a shot, not a melee kill, and not the kill itself by any other follow-up. Pick up a knife, aim, throw, and the throw has to be the killing blow.

The earliest spot: Chapter 4’s ambush room

The intended moment comes in Chapter 4, From Hell It Rose, sub-chapter “At the bottom”, during the “Progress through the Trial” objective:

  1. In the room where Leni crosses to the opposite lever, enemies ambush you — archers included.
  2. A knife lies on the ground in the fighting area. Press the pickup input (R3) to grab it.
  3. Aim at any archer — they tend to hold positions, which makes them easy targets — and throw. A hit kills, and the trophy pops.

The room is small and the archers are stationary, so even a first-throw miss is recoverable: knives are limited, but reloading the checkpoint restores the setup for another attempt.

The backup spot: Chapter 5

If you cleared Chapter 4 without the trophy, the next natural chance is Chapter 5, Desolation It Wrought, sub-chapter “Battle grounds”, whose engagements also feature throwables and archers. The same rule applies: knife pickup, aimed throw, killing blow. After Chapter 5, watch for any fight with both knives on the ground and crossbowmen — the trophy checks the kill type, not the location.

FAQ

Does the knife have to be the killing blow?

Yes. Wounding an archer with a throw and finishing with something else does not count. If your throw leaves the archer alive, reload and try again with the next knife.

Is Returning the Favor missable?

Not permanently. The moment-based setup is easy to walk past, but the trophy can be earned any time via Chapter Select — Chapter 4’s ambush room replays identically.

What other trophies use thrown items?

Throwables feed several combat trophies: No Holds Barred counts stun-by-throw, while Overboard counts environment kills. Knives and bottles share the same throw slot, so decide which trophy your next throw is feeding.
